Project Documentation & Source Code

The full implementation (Python + JavaScript) is documented below. The system uses MFCC features, a 2D CNN classifier trained on the RAVDESS dataset, and real-time Web Audio API for browser-based inference.

How It Works — End-to-End Pipeline

From microphone waveform to emotion prediction in under 100 ms

01

Audio Capture & Streaming

The browser captures audio at 22.05 kHz mono via the MediaStream API. Frames are 25 ms long with 10 ms hop, producing a continuous stream of 512-sample windows.

navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia({ audio: true })
02

Preprocessing — VAD & Normalization

A simple energy-based Voice Activity Detector (VAD) removes silent frames. The remaining signal is normalized to zero mean and unit variance. A pre-emphasis filter (y[n] = x[n] − 0.97·x[n−1]) boosts high frequencies.

def pre_emphasis(signal, coeff=0.97): return np.append(signal[0], signal[1:] - coeff * signal[:-1])
03

Feature Extraction — MFCC + Chroma + Spectral

For each frame we compute a 47-dimensional feature vector: 13 MFCC means + 13 MFCC stds + 12 chroma + 6 spectral statistics (centroid, bandwidth, rolloff, contrast, flatness, ZCR) + energy + pitch. The full clip is represented as a 128 × 216 spectrogram.

mfcc = librosa.feature.mfcc(y=y, sr=sr, n_mfcc=13) chroma = librosa.feature.chroma_stft(y=y, sr=sr) spectral = librosa.feature.spectral_centroid(y=y, sr=sr)
04

Neural Network — 2D CNN Classifier

A 2D Convolutional Neural Network treats the Mel-spectrogram as a single-channel image and learns time-frequency patterns. Architecture: Conv(32, 3×3) → Pool → Conv(64, 3×3) → Pool → Conv(128, 3×3) → Pool → Dense(128) → Dense(6)

class AudioCNN(nn.Module): def __init__(self, num_classes=6): super().__init__() self.conv1 = nn.Conv2d(1, 32, kernel_size=3, padding=1) self.conv2 = nn.Conv2d(32, 64, kernel_size=3, padding=1) self.conv3 = nn.Conv2d(64, 128, kernel_size=3, padding=1) self.pool = nn.MaxPool2d(2, 2) self.fc1 = nn.Linear(128 * 16 * 16, 128) self.fc2 = nn.Linear(128, num_classes) self.dropout = nn.Dropout(0.3)
05

Training — RAVDESS Dataset

Trained on the RAVDESS dataset (1,440 utterances, 24 actors, 6 emotions). 80/20 train/test split. Adam optimizer with lr=1e-3, cross-entropy loss, 30 epochs, batch size 32. Test accuracy: ~78%.

optimizer = torch.optim.Adam(model.parameters(), lr=1e-3) criterion = nn.CrossEntropyLoss()
06

Real-time Inference — Web Audio API

In the browser, an AnalyserNode streams FFT bins via getByteFrequencyData(). The JS port of the CNN (TensorFlow.js) produces predictions at ~30 FPS with sub-100 ms latency.

analyser.getByteFrequencyData(freqData); const features = extractMFCC(freqData, sampleRate); const logits = model.predict(features); const emotion = EMOTIONS[logits.argMax()];
